Python web scraping: plan a reliable first extraction
Define fields, inspect HTML, select a collection method and validate a small sample before scaling.
Web scraping is the process of turning website content into structured records. The first task is deciding which records you need and whether a documented API, download or feed already provides them. A simpler authorized source is usually easier to maintain than a page parser.
Define your output first
Write a short schema before writing code. For a public product catalog, you might need title, price, currency, product URL and collection time. State how missing values will be represented. Keep a source URL so a reviewer can trace a questionable row back to the page.
Inspect one page
Open the page source and check whether the data exists in its HTML. If the initial HTML contains only an application shell, a basic HTTP download may not contain the visible records. Look for an official API or export before deciding that browser automation is necessary.
Separate fetching, parsing and writing
- Fetch a small permitted sample with an identifiable request and a timeout.
- Parse the fields into records without writing directly to the final file.
- Validate required fields and normalize formats.
- Write with a CSV library rather than manually joining commas.
Python includes HTTP request utilities, an HTML parser and a CSV module. Follow those references for API details. Keep an example HTML file so parser changes can be checked without repeatedly requesting a site.
Plan for changes and failures
Set request limits, use bounded retries and stop when a source denies access. Review the site's rules and applicable obligations before collection. Do not treat a public page as permission to collect personal details or bypass access controls. Log failed URLs separately so a partial run is not mistaken for complete data.
Review the result
Check a sample against the original pages. Count missing fields, unexpected currencies and duplicates. Use the CSV cleaner for a small export. For a maintained extraction pipeline, CustomWebX business automation is one implementation option. If business contacts later enter a consent-based calling workflow, evaluate communications separately with our Kandrex handoff checklist.
